Evaluation Four

4) How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Throught my piece I used a range of media technologies to create my product, construct, plan and the research into my prouct as well as how I evaulated what I have done throughout my A2 year. I used smilair technology in my AS year although I have developed my skills a lot further in my second year. I have used new media technologies that I previosuly didn't use in my first year. However, for my transation task into A2 media I used the same editing software for my media product this year which was final cut pro. I have tried to be more creative this year with my work and tried to ptoduce more work on my blog to help me with my evulaution and  overall look into my work.

(This process is non-linear which was a most easier system to use, as using a linear system would be much harder and it would of taken a longer process to in comparison to a non-linear editing program such as final cut pro)

^ These images above are little screen shots of my editing process and you can see what type of transitions I used when editing my video as well as you being able to seeing what clips I choose to use.

Evaluation Three

3) What have you learned from your audience

feedback?

What is an audience: an audience can be anybody from myself, my peers, teachers etc. I wanted an audience that consume my product and that was a strong aim of my mine. As an active audience means my product had come across well with its aims.
Throughout my piece an original personal aim was for myself to try and make it what the audience wanted as after they are the consumers of my product. So for my first piece of audience feedback I conducted a survey and asked a wide range of people 8 questions that helped me understand how to attract my audience and what they wanted.
However, audience feedback is an important feature to have as it helps you change your piece if some didn't find some features of the piece attractive or not.It also helps you make it more appealing to an audience. Its a good thing to have constructuve critcism because it really helps the indivual learn from their mistakes.
The audience is a key feature of the product because without people consuming my product it wouldn't have a large impact and my messages and values won't be put across as their would be nobody to view and understand my products.
Although the genre of my music video and ancillary texts is indie meaning becoming popular isn't something that they often consider when producing products. I wanted to create products that are promoted successfully so what the audience want is important.

Planning and research:

I decided that I would use my first piece of audience feedback as a guidance in how to create a good and succeful music video. I discovered that people often liked all three of the different video structures i.e abstract, narrative and performance. From this I learnt that it would be best to listen to what the audience wanted, in the end I combined the performance of my artist and a having a narrative (which is the most important feature of my music video) . Also from my research I learnt that a younger audience  would watch more band/artist performance videos then an older audience. This helped me decided to put my actress lip syncing in the video as I didn't originally plan to I wanted my video to be completely narrative. The change was so my product would appeal to a younger audience as the consumer would have control over whether my product would be successful or not. I then asked what genre do you must prefer and most answers where rock, pop and indie. At the time there was no specified genre I wanted to choose. I took inconsideration my struggles from last year in the fact my genre of music magazine was not an area of music I could relate to. This and my audience feedback effecting my discussion in choosing indie as the genre of my product. The other questions weren't so much related to my product they were more related to the individual and to get a evaluation on those figures rather than have an effect on my final products.

MUSIC PROMO:

Here is some verbal feedback that I recored of people saying what they liked and didn't like about my music video. The feedback was generally similar to one another which was to improve the lip syncing near to the end, sort out the shaking of the camera, improve in the acting skills of the actress (which was difficult to edit around). All of these I had noticed when I first published my second draft. However, I found this useful as I edited these changes and created a better product. There was also issues with my sound which I found difflict to resolove as it was troubles with editing software not the audio as I tried out different copies of the song and I still had this issue. My auidence noticed this and I tried to fix it by downloading a new verison of the song however the problem was still there which made my video less effective to my audience.

SECOND DRAFT:

FINAL DRAFT:

From this you can see drastic changes to my video. I have used mostly the same clips as last time, reduced some clips sequences and editing the lip syncing problem mostly. I also added more effects onto certain clips e.g the sink sequences.

Evaulation Two

2) How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Other way my products have all linked together: is because I chose the song 'Skinny love' I decided that I would title my album to have the same name which is a convention that most artist have done. Which relates my product back to the music industry as well it being related to other products. I created a false persona for my actress and named her Willow which I thought would stand out to an audience because of  the indivaulity. Plus the factor that being in the genre I choose having orignal ideas is a key concept which you wouldn't have perhaps if you chose another genre such as pop.

In order to create differences between ancillary texts I decided to have different fonts as I wanted the text to both stand out on their own ( but I  wanted to keep links between texts). Such as I used the text orange juice and grilled chicken which I later discovered when looking on dafont.com for my digipak. For my music magazine advertisement I used the LA TRUITE A PAPA and impact, the range of different fonts have an effect on the impact of my products. Here is an image of fonts I looked into using before I started the process:

Evaluation One

1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Brief summary of my product:

For my media product I've done a music promo for the song 'Skinny love' by Birdy. Although Birdy's version of the song is a cover by the original band who sang it  Bon Iver an American Folk indie band. I have chosen to do this song in particular because it was once one of my favourites and I enjoy the genre of music the song comes from. I also created a digipak and a magazine advertisement for the album.
In my products: the music promo, magazine advertisement and digipak I tried to sick to conventions as I wanted my product to be similar to real life products. I researched the conventions of each of the different products before I started in the process of making them.I decided that would be a better idea to start off my products with the conventions then adapt them to my own because that is a similar convention of the indie genre.

MUSIC MUSIC ADVERTISEMENT:

A way my magazine advertisement uses conventions is through the use how I've included the artists name, album title, an image (of either the artist or something related to the album) and the date it comes out etc. These conventions helped me create my own media product as I used them as examples for my own work.

The first image was my magazine and there's a second image I took my ideas off the second image with the use of the black background and one singular image. However my image was the central object of the product rather than the album title and artist, I did this become I wanted my product to have its own originality and which what I think I produced.

I also used some of colour scheme from The Stone Roses 20th Anniversary advertsiement poster the (black and white) because this was a colour scheme similair to the one I used last year but without the red and I enjoy the look the colours have together.

Here is a slide share from when I decided to analyse the conventions of a magazine advertisement so I knew what to add and what not to add. On the last slide I decided is where I analyse the magazine advertisement for Adele for her album 21. Although I didn't copy/inspire any ideas from this magazine I decided to use the conventions that it showed. Which I showed in the text above. It was helpful to know what to include. Although a feature this product didn't use which my product did would be the use of the letting the audience know the release date.

MUSIC VIDEO:

My music video had the conventions of any of other music video such as my video included the use of lip syncing (which I included near to the end and mostly around the chorus of the song). My video also included a narrative which is a cliche of a music videos however, I used different ideas into my video that are like those in the indie genre.

such as:

This is a wide shot of one of my actors leaving the main character behind, I used this wide shot such as its a convention of the actress being alone. Which is a central idea of the genre. I also choice to do this shot because I wanted to link a convention to the genre.

The image above is a shot of the actress in an urbany area which is another convention of the indie genre.

This is a close up shot I decided to show of my actress which is a convection of the genre. I added the effect onto my video like a video by Ben Howard that I analysed.

In my music video I filmed in three locations to show the simplicity of the genre: a house, the beach and in a green room. I did these locations because of the isolation that it shows because she herself is alone.

Before starting the filming of my music video I also watched other music videos that are currently in the charts and looked at the videos to see what techniques I liked in these videos and decided what I would like to include in mine.

DIGIPAK:

Linking theories:

We can relate back to Kate Domaille (2004) in that every story told can fit into one of 8 narratives types. Each of these has an original source. Achielles, Candide, Cinderella, Circe, Faust, Orpheus, Romeo and Juliet, Tristant and Iseut are all storylines Domaille suggested existed.  We could link my music video to Orpheus storyline which is: The loss of something personal, the gift that is taken away etc. That could be linked to how my video starts of and is a hidden theme in the representation of it. Such as my main characters mother takes the gift of love that she has to offer from her daughter and you could argue that it’s also a loss.

We could also relate my music video to Levi-Strauss (1958)  He has ideas about the narrative that he believed all stories operated to certain clear binary opposites e.g black vs white, rich vs poor. Which could also be argued to be true with the fact that the two characters in my video are opposites of each other. As the main character is depressed and the second character is happy and joyful and the two balance the narrative out.
